Fragrances - What You Need to Know
[Original date of publication: 07/03/2003]

Did you know that most allergic reactions to cosmetic or cleansing products can be traced to fragrance ingredients, according to an article in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Fragrance allergies are the most common cause of skin rashes known as allergic contact dermatitis.

The main goal of treatment is to stop using the offending product. But this can be more difficult than it sounds. Because of the current governmental lack of labeling regulations, products touted as fragrance-free can actually include synthetic or natural fragrance ingredients!

For example, a certain popular brand of soap manufactured as a fragrance-free cleansing bar includes sweet almond oil, rosewood oil, cedarwood oil, and rose oil, all of which are fragrance ingredients. Many companies get away with this by claiming the ingredient is a moisturizing element or a preservative and not a fragrance. In some cases, the fragrance ingredients are not used to produce a pleasant aroma but are instead used to mask an otherwise unpleasant odor the product might have. It's hard to believe that there's no definition for fragrance-free.

At this point, you may be thinking that if you read the label you can educate yourself about the ingredients in a product. Not always so! There is still an absence of labeling regulations in this product area.

People who are allergic to fragrances typically develop redness, scaling or itching, often on the hands or face. Eyelid allergies and underarm rashes are also very common reactions from soap, body gels, or body lotions. If you suspect you may have an allergy, visit a dermatologist to help diagnose the problem.
